BURDUR

Burdur is a city southwestern Turkey and the seat of the Burdur Province of Turkey, located in the southwest and bordering Muğla and Antalya to the South, Denizli to the West, Afyon to the North, and Isparta to the East. It has an area of 6,887 km² and a population of 246,134, the provincial capital is Burdur city.

Burdur is located in the "Lakes Region" of Turkey and has many lakes of various sizes, largest of which, Burdur Lake, is named after the province. Salda Lake is the second largest lake in the province and is considered to be one of the cleanest lakes in the world.

Although it lacks the turquoise coast, it is of interest with its natural beauties and historical remains dating as far as 6000 BC. The thermal resorts are also attractive for those who like spas.

The most appealing feature of Burdur is Insuyu, the second largest cave of the world. It is 12 kilometers from Burdur. There are millions of stalactites and stalagmites as well as nine pools in the cave which is 597 m long and it is good for wandering in little boats. Since the water in the cave is curing for diabetes it is widely visited by diabetics.

For nature lovers and worshippers of swimming and beaches there are plenty of opportunities. The Centik beach is on the side of Lake Burdur, 8 kilometers from the city; the Salda Lake is a rarely visited camping area with forested surrounding and a delightful beach, a must to see. For fishing, Golhisar Lake is excellent. All of these lakes provide a rare beauty of nature and fauna around them.

Sagalassos at Aglasun town, 37 kilometers to Burdur, was the capital of Psydia and has many historical remains like a Roman theatre of 12,000 seat capacity, the tombs and the citadel from medieval ages. The Hacilar district is another remarkable site for historical remains with statues dating back to Neolithic Age. Cybira at Golhisar, Cremna at Camlik Bucak, Kumcay and Incirhan are other historical sites. Picnicking, camping, hunting, and fishing are other attractions.

Student Life at MAKU

Accommodation
The city of Burdur has a wide range of accommodation for  the students coming from outside  the city. One of the accommodation choices is the dormitories of MAKU which is the cheapest choice. The dormitories are 1200 girl and   660 boy students’ dormitories with bed capacity attached to General Directorate of Higher Education Credit and Dormitories institution. Also, the construction of a 500 bed capacity dormitory is in process  in province centre and Bucak town within the body of Higher Education Credit and Dormitories Institution. Another accommodation choice for the students is the student pensions around the city. The cost of these pensions is between 200 YTL(100 euro)-250 YTL(125 Euro). Renting a house is the other alternative that students can choose for  the accommodation. The cost of renting a house around the university is between about 360 YTL(180 Euro)-400 YTL(200 Euro).In addition to all these preferences, the construction of an Erasmus House is going on. It will be ready in the year 2011.

Transportation
Transportation in Burdur is easy because there are always Public buses in the city and it is cheaper for the students. For the foreign students, there are two choices for their arrival to Burdur. One of them is to fly to İstanbul and then take a bus from there. The other choise is to fly to Antalya and then take a bus from Antalya Bus Terminal. The latter is a bit more expensive than the former.

The terminals located at the entrance of our city connect to all other cities of our country. There are private public buses available to arrive at the city centrum. Transportation is possible with cooperative and unity vehicles from the district terminals and certain points in our city.

Directions by Bus
Burdur; is located in the West Mediterranean Region and is accessible through  motorways openingto Aegean Region by Afyon, to the Middle Anatolin Region by Isparta, to the Marmara Region by Denizli. It is on the motorway of İstanbul-Ankara-Antalya. All the vehicles going to Antalya from the Regions of Marmara, Aegean, and Middle Anatolian pass through our city.

The train journey is available to İzmir, Ankara, Isparta, Afyon, Denizli, and İstanbul. The timings for this vary in winter and summer months.

The airway transportation is carried out by Süleyman Demirel Airport and Antalya Airport, located at the distance of 25kms and 130kms respectively.

Social Activities
Social activities of our university are carried out in cooperation by clubs established by academic units, the Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports Department and the students. The aim of cultural activities is to make good use of our students’ free time; to help them acquire useful habits, to give them a chance to exhibit and present their works, to encourage them have the habits of resting and having fun; to help them in following scientific, artistic and technological developments and participation in these activities, and contributing to their development in terms of culture. Furthermore, many conferences, seminars, panels and other activities are held in education period with the participation of guests who have a national and international reputation. Theatre, music, folk dance, exhibitions, colloquies are held at Science, Project and Spring Festivals in May every year. While the students have an opportunity to express themselves with the activities held, shows performed by units and concerts, the festival has a richer atmosphere with the participation of professional artists and groups as well.

Food Facilities
The students studying at faculties/higher schools/vocational schools of our university and the personnel working at our university are provided with health service by health centers and public hospitals. In order to benefit from health services, the students are required to document that their parents are not related to social security foundations. Our students, whose conditions are suitable, can take referrals from offices related to “Health Record” and their own school secretary. Medicine and treatment expenses of the students documenting that they are not related to any social security foundations are met by Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports Department. A dentist, a nurse, psychologist and a dietician work in the Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports Department and they can interfere in emergency cases.

Cost of Living
Burdur is one of the cheapest cities in Turkey to live in. It has a large student population, so housing and food costs are less than they are in many other places. Entertainment and transport costs are low because many students live within walking distance of the University, shops and social facilities. There are lots of places offering student discounts.

Weather
The weather in Burdur is hot and dry in summer time, cold and rainy in winter time. In spring time it is moderate.
